Tuesday is Taco Night at Woody's

Tuesday, February 12

After a busy morning shooting videos and stills in and around El Coco, we relaxed back at the condo. We prepared a Tico-style lunch with roast chicken, gallo pinto (rice and beans), salad, bread and cheese, with fresh mango slices for dessert. Bob worked on his videos and took a siesta. I worked on our blog.

Along about 3:30 pm or so, we joined three other neighbors who were hanging around the pool, deep in conversation. Our neighbors Colleen and Ray from New York state mentioned that they would be walking into town and going to Woody's Bar and Bistro for Taco Night. We decided to go along and check it out.

On Tuesday evenings Woody's puts on a Happy Hour special from 5:00-7:00, which they call Taco Night. During this time, they have a taco buffet and tacos cost $2 each or three for $5. Likewise, beers and margaritas also cost $2 each. The place gets packed and the atmosphere is festive. We arrived a little before 5 pm and got one of the last tables. We enjoyed experiencing this El Coco tradition with our new friends and their dog,Tuffy (yes, dogs are allowed in restaurants in Costa Rica).

After dinner, at twilight, we walked up the street about a block and watched the monkeys (Howler Monkeys) move through the trees from Coconutz (their frequent hangout in the late afternoon) towards their nighttime sleeping area at the edge of town. We must have counted at least a dozen monkeys, including some very young ones, moving along their trail in the trees.

Once twilight turned to darkness and the monkeys were gone from the downtown area, we wandered over to the Helandria (ice cream parlor) and bought some gelato for dessert, which we ate outdoors on a deck, watching the nighttime street scene along the main drag.

Then, we walked along the street looking for a taxi, and ran into the three women with whom we had shared our tour to Palo Verde two days earlier. They had just returned from a day trip down the west coast to Playa Samara, a beach rumored to be the most beautiful in Costa Rica. They had a rental car and were able to drive there in about two hours. We are contemplating a bus trip down there, which is likely to take quite a bit longer.

Meanwhile, we are planning a shorter bus trip for tomorrow to a couple of beaches down the coast - Playa Flamingo and Playa Brasilito. Playa Flamingo is about halfway between Playas del Coco and Playa Samara, but between waiting for bus connections and making many stops along the way, the bus ride to Flamingo will probably take as long as the car ride to Playa Samara. We shall see. The bus ride itself will probably be an adventure.
